Renewable Energy Overview

Renewable Energy is that generated from natural resources such as wind, sunlight, rain etc. In 2004 about $30 Billion was invested in renewable energy sources worldwide. The extreme growth of the sector is mainly due to the growth in Grid-connected solar systems, which grew 60% in each year 2000 to 2004. This growth has lead to over 400,000 homes in Japan, Germany and the United States having solar modules fitted to their rooftops.

So how do we measure energy?

Electricity is measured in three units. Volts, Amps and Watts. Voltage (Volts) is the measurement of pressure, commonly used are 240V in AC applications and 12V or 24V in DC Applications. Amperage (Amps) is the flow rate of "electrical current" that is available. Wattage (Watts) is the measurement of the amount of power being used.

What is AC & DC Electricity?

If you like there are two types of electricity, Alternating Current (AC) or Direct Current (DC). Most home appliances are AC typically higher voltage than DC (240V in Australia). Where as DC Appliances or Direct Current are typically low voltage appliances used in mobile homes and remote homes.

The current in an AC circuit alternates in direction, like a back and forth motion, whereas the flow through a wire in a DC circuit is continuous in one direction.

Some handy things to know:

To convert Watts to Amps use - Amps=Watts/Volts (for example 12 Watts / 12 Volts = 1 Amp)

To convert Volts to Watts use - Watts=Volts X Amps (for example 2 Amps X 12 Volts = 24 Watts)

To covert Watts to Volts use - Volts=Watts/Amps (for example 120 Watts / 10 Amps = 12 Volts)

1000 Watts = 1 KiloWatt

1000 KiloWatt = 1 Mega Watt
